If you are on the east coast, it won't matter so much and even a .45 ACP with +P and Ball Ammo should do for that. The benefit of a 10mm is that you are going to get several more rounds assuming the charging bear is slow. The bigger the bear, the bigger the bullet required and hotter too. .357 is usually considered inadequate for the larger browns, etc. Although there is a small camp that claims the smaller diameter .357 penetrates better (very small). .45 Colt is a great round and can be loaded up to kill most any bear.

Nice warm 10mm (180gr@1350fps) has much more manageable recoil than warm 44mag (240gr @1400fps) and honestly easier recoil than most 357. I'm done with powerful revolver cartridges if I can get something close in semi auto. Semi autos are lighter, lighter recoiling, carry more rounds and carry eaiser than revolvers.
