May 7, 2018 · Kentucky is home to great geode sites. The Fort Payne and Warsaw-Salem Formations in east-central Kentucky provide good hunting along the creek beds. The Green River area in south-central Kentucky also has good findings, and it is known for large geodes measuring two feet in diameter. The bottom layer is mostly clay in which you can find crinoid stems and brachiopods. Above this layer, you find a layer of shale that is about three to four feet thick. Above this layer, and extending upwards of 10 feet is the layer the geodes are in. About 95 percent of the geodes at this location are quartz lined. The bumpy outer surface of the geodes consists of a rind. Chalcedony is a crypto-crystalline (microscopic-size crystals) variety of quartz.
