Re: 1989 Johnson 88 SPL won't go into gear. dahoopd, Item #74 is an anode. There is also an anode on the stern bracket. In order to function properly, anodes need to be clean, metal to metal contact with the housing. You can acess #74 anode bolt under the trim tab plate.A volume of 88 cubic inches converts to 1442.1 cubic centimeters. If it has deep grooves in it, you will proabaly need to overbore it to clean up the walls. Also, in rare overeheats, the bridges in the intake and exhaust area can crack-making the block scrap. Neutral is with the stick straight up. It should lock in place until you pull the trigger under the handle. That little lever is the fast idle lever. Some assorted thoughts on your fuel problem: You should be able to pump the hose bulb up firm every time.
