Take a big screwdriver and short across the two big connections on the solenoid. This will test the starter. Shorting the solenoid like this puts battery power straight onto the starter. If the engine is running poorly at 3/4 to full throttle, the main jet is the likely problem. Some of us have discovered that the stock air box lets in too much air when the cover is cut all the way around. At high speeds it will cause a lean mixture and begin to surge.
