I am a US IMG starting IM residency this july at an academic program which has previously matched its residents at multiple above average institutions for GI and Heme/Onc (my two interests). My institution has an in-house GI fellowship. Step 1 in low 220s and Step 2 240s. I am torn between heme/onc and GI.* Consider whether you can have a longer and more fulfilling career as a hospitalist or as hem-onc. For example, if you are neutral about being a hospitalist and quit after a few years vs. if love hem-onc and work for decades, then it'd be worth it to do hem-onc. The schedule them for an office visit prior to getting chemo, thow a steth on their chest real quick and take advandage of a billling oppt. When you see a pt once a week the vist is fast, but still > 50 is near impossible.I'd probably choose the Onc boards if I was going to do this. It not an easy test, but it's much more straightforward than the heme boards and actually reflects what you're learning and will see in practice than the heme boards do.
